When the weather gets really dry you'll notice cracking in the yard and along the walls of your foundation. Don't fill in the gap! The gap is a result of the clay soil shrinking. If you fill in the gap there will not be enough relief once the soil begins to swell in the rainy season...and this will result in your wall being pushed inward and cracking. If you must address this problem you can keep the area against the house from drying out too much with a soaker hose, or you can put down plastic sheeting and cover it with mulch to hide the gap.
