Do you know the rule of thumb for the planting distance from your home's foundation ? Large trees such as oak need to be planted about half their mature height away from your home. When large trees are closer than this they can and do affect the moisture levels around your foundation. The largest of oak trees will pull as much as 75 gallons of water out of the soil per day. Their roots will often head for your foundation as a source of additional water and will clog pipes, undermine shallow foundations, and can sometimes physically push in walls if the tree is growing closer than 10' from your home.
